For any fly angler, the saltwater Grand Slam—landing a tarpon, bonefish, and permit in a single day—is the holy grail of flats fishing. So when the Choona Crew packed their rods and headed south to Blue Horizon Lodge in Belize, we had one mission: achieve the Grand Slam.

Belize’s famed “Permit Alley” is known as one of the best places on the planet to chase these elusive fish. We knew we’d find the fish—our challenge was getting them to eat. As any seasoned saltwater fly angler will tell you, seeing a permit is one thing, but convincing one to take your fly? That’s the real battle.

Over the course of the trip, we had countless shots at all three species. Bonefish were cooperative as always, and the tarpon were willing to play. But the permit? They made us work. All three anglers in our crew had never landed a permit before this trip. Notice the past tense there? That changed in Belize.

With the expert guidance of Blue Horizon’s legendary guides, patience, and some well-placed casts, we each checked the permit off our list. That feeling of watching a permit finally tip up on your fly, setting the hook, and hearing your reel scream? Absolute magic.

Hats off to the incredible staff and guides at Blue Horizon Lodge for making this one of the most unforgettable fly fishing experiences of our lives. If you're looking for a rad fly fishing adventure, put Belize at the top of your list. Permit Alley will not disappoint.
